Discipleship
It is our desire at Cornerstone to be a disciple-making church. But that’s pretty much what every Christian church say they either want to do, or, are already doing. But are they? A more important question for us; are we making disciples? The following links below will provide the tools to help us in the disciple-making process.
What is a disciple? It comes from a verb that means "to learn". A disciple attached himself to someone to gain practical or theoretical knowledge by instruction and experience. They were to learn everything their teacher knew, becoming like him or her in character, and then they were to faithfully transmit this information to others. If the person you taught to be a disciple has not taught someone else, you haven't made a disciple.
The Great Commission (Matthew 28: 16-20) states that we (Jesus' followers) are to go and “make disciples” (a command) of all nations. How is this to be done? As we go, wherever we go, we witness Christ to a lost and fallen world (Acts 1:8). Those who trust in Him as Lord and Savior enter the community of believers and are baptized in the name (singular in Greek) of the triune God; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And then we teach them. Teach them what? To obey everything Christ commanded.
Discipleship involves both evangelism (going and witnessing to the lost) and training those who have committed their lives to Jesus Christ. The purpose is so that they will know God’s Word (head knowledge), so they that will walk in obedience and grow in maturity (heart action). Someone has once said. "If you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day. If you teach a man to fish, he will eat for a lifetime." Discipleship is the process of teaching new believers, and even old believers in Christ, how to fish.
Disciple-making Training Manual (DTM)
This eight week training is designed for a more relational one-on-one discipleship experience. The Disciple will have a short lesson to work on each day, and then get together with their Discipler and discuss the week’s study and make sure they understand what they studied. Some weeks they will even put into practice what they learned. Click here to view the pdf file.
The DTM is dived into four sections to affect our entire beings; head, heart, and hands: 1) What it means to be a follower of Jesus, 2) What are the essential truths of the Christian faith we need to know with our heads, 3) What are some of the essential disciplines that we need to put into practice with our hearts, 4) What are some of the things we should experience with our hands.
There is an appendix at the back of the DTM for further individual study.
International Training Institute (ITI)
Cornerstone has partnered with Network Beyond (networkbeyond.org) to supply teachers and prayer partners for their International Training Institute (ITI) to help develop leaders around the world. Using an eight-course, highly relational teaching curriculum, the training provides times of prayer and interaction to engage the hearts, minds, and lives of each participant.
