Cornerstone’s 30 Weeks of Experiencing Life Groups
WEEK 1: God
Cornerstone LifeGroup
Week of September 25, 2016
“GOD”
Open in prayer. Begin your discussion by reading the Key Verse a few times and then try and get the group to recite it from memory. Do the same with the Key Idea.
Key Verse: 2 Corinthians 13:14
“May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”
Key Idea: I believe the God of the Bible is the one true God — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Key Question: Who Is God?
ICE BREAKER: On a scale of 1 – 6 to rate how strongly you believe the statements below (1 = no belief at all, 6 = complete confidence).
______ I believe the God of the Bible is the only true God.
______ I believe the God of the Bible is one in essence but distinct in person — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
______ I believe Jesus is God in the flesh — who died and rose bodily from the dead.
______ I believe the Holy Spirit is God and dwells in Christians to empower them to live the Christian life.
STUDY: Have someone read the following verses out loud
Read: Genesis 1:1; Psalm 19:1-4; Romans 1:20
Ask: The Bible never defends the existence of God but it is always assumed; what do we learn about God from these verses? Will anyone have an excuse for not trusting Him?
Read: Joshua 24:14-15
Ask: Have there always been other gods? Who are some gods people worship today?
Read: Deuteronomy 6:4
Ask: How many Gods did God’s people believe there were?
Read: John 1:1
Ask: Who is the Logos? Did John see Jesus as being God? Who do people say Jesus is today? How long has Jesus been God? Was He created?
Read: Matthew 3:16-17
Ask: We see all 3 present at Jesus’ baptism. How do you reconcile the equation 3=1?
What word did theologians invent to describe God’s essence (Trinity)? What does that mean? (3 person who share a being, or essence) Is God relational by nature? Since we’re created in God’s image, are we relational in some sense? What does that mean?
APPLICATION:
Ask: Do you believe God is 1 essence with 3 distinct persons…why or why not? What difference does this make? How do the following 4 statements affect how you live?
1) God is God and I am not. 2) God is in control even when I don’t understand.
3) God is in charge and makes the rules. 4) God is worth following.
Ask: Knowing what you know about God, how is that going to change the way you live?
Close in prayer and pray for your group throughout the week!
