Cornerstone’s 30 Weeks of Experiencing Life Groups
WEEK 8: Compassion
Cornerstone LifeGroup
Week of November 13, 2016
“Compassion”
Open in prayer. Begin your discussion by reading the Key Verse a few times and then try and get the group to recite it from memory. Do the same with the Key Idea.
Key Verse: Psalm 82:3-4:
3 Defend the weak and the fatherless;
uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.
4 Rescue the weak and the needy;
deliver them from the hand of the wicked.
Key Question: What is my responsibility to other people?
Key Idea: I believe God calls all Christians to show compassion to people in need.
ICE BREAKER: Have everyone tell two things about themselves, but only one is true and the other is false. Have the group guess which one is true about the person.
STUDY: Have someone read the following verses out loud
Read: Luke 10:25-29
Ask: Who is testing whom in this story? Does the lawyer think he passed the test? Why or why not? What does it mean to love your neighbor as much as you love yourself?
Read: Luke 10:30-37
Ask: Why does Jesus answer with a story rather than a direct answer? How might one justify the actions of the priest and Levite (see Lev 21:1-3; Nu 19:11-22)? What’s the plot twist in this story?
Read: Luke 10:38
Ask: What is Jesus’ point of the story?
APPLICATION:
Ask: With whom do you identify in this story? Why?
Ask: Who has been a Good Samaritan in your life? What makes this person “good?”
Ask: What do you do when you see someone on a street corner asking for a handout?
Ask: Who is your neighbor?
Ask: To whom will you be a Good Samaritan or a “neighbor” to this week?
Close in prayer and pray for your group throughout the week!
