WEEK 24: Self-Control
Cornerstone LifeGroup
Week of May 14, 2017
“Virtue 4: Self-Control”
Open in prayer. Begin your discussion by reading the Key Verse(s) a few times and then try and get the group to recite it from memory. Do the same with the Key Idea.
Key Verse: Titus 2:11-13
11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people,12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.
Key Question: How does God free me from addictions and sinful habits?
Key Idea: I have the power through Christ to control myself.
ICE BREAKER: Ask one or all of the following questions out loud and discuss.
What do you have trouble saying “no” too?
Who is a Christian you really admire?
What quality in them would you like see more of in your life?
STUDY: Have someone read the following verses out loud.
Read: Titus 2: 1-10
Ask: What qualities is Titus to teach to various groups: To older men? To older women? To young men? To slaves?
Does “old” and “young” refer just to chronological age?
Where do you fall in terms of age?
What methods might he use to instill these attitudes and actions (vss7-8)?
Read: Titus 2: 11-15
Ask: What does salvation mean for our behavior in the “present age” (vs 12)?
What conflicts does this imply Christians will face?
How does this new lifestyle relate to Jesus’ death (vs 14)? To His return (vs13)?
APPLICATION: What difference does this make in the way I live?
Ask: Who has been most influential in teaching you what it means to be a Christian?
Ask: Do you have anyone you could be helping now?
Ask: How can we help each other to say “no” to temptation?
Close in prayer and pray for your group and family throughout the week
