Cornerstone’s 30 Weeks of Experiencing Life Groups
WEEK 21: Virtue 1: Love
Cornerstone LifeGroup
Week of March 19, 2017
“Virtue 1: Love”
Open in prayer. Begin your discussion by reading the Key Verse a few times and then try and get the group to recite it from memory. Do the same with the Key Idea.
Key Verse: 1 John 4:10-12
“This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God, but if we love one another, God lives in us and his
love is made complete in us.”
Key Question: What does it mean to sacrificially and unconditionally love others?
Key Idea: I am committed to loving God and loving others.
ICE BREAKER: Ask the following questions out loud and discuss.
Spiritually, what plant best describes you now: Towering oak? Weeping willow? Tumble-weed? Crab-apple tree? Explain. What does “love” look like in our key verse?
STUDY: Have someone read the following verses out loud.
Read: John 15:1-4
Ask: How does God “prune” His people? What tools does He use? What is the purpose of“pruning? How does one “remain” in Christ?
Read: John 15: 5-8
Ask: Jesus repeats “remain in me,” love,” and “bearing fruit.” How are these word related? How do Christians show themselves to be Jesus’ disciples? What is “fruit?”
Read: John 15:9-17
Ask: How do verses 9 and 12 tie together? How is love the essential dynamic of the Christian life? How do verses 12-13 take the command to love even further than 13: 34-35? How does our relationship with Jesus change once we start practicing this example of
love? What is the link between obedience and prayer (vv. 7, 16; see 14:13-14)?
APPLICATION: What difference does this make in the way I live?
Ask: As a branch on Christ’s vine, how would you describe the fruit in your life: Grade A? Juicy? Green? Wormy? Why?
Ask: Do you feel like Jesus’ servant or friend? How do we develop that friendship? What does Christian love look like (you may want to read 1 Corinthians 13)?
Ask: What can you do this coming week to produce much fruit and to show love to someone? What areas of your life need pruning? What are you going to do about it?
Close in prayer and pray for your group and family throughout the week!
