Cornerstone’s 30 Weeks of Experiencing Life Groups
WEEK 14: Single-Mindedness
Cornerstone LifeGroup
Week of January 29, 2017
“Single-Mindedness”
Open in prayer. Begin your discussion by reading the Key Verse a few times and then try and get the group to recite it from memory. Do the same with the Key Idea.
Key Verse: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well (Matthew 6:33).”
Key Question: How do I focus on Jesus amid distractions?
Key Idea: I focus on God and his priorities for my life (no matter what).
ICE BREAKER: Ask the following questions out loud and discuss.
What do people in China call their good plates?
What has been the most daring adventure of your life to date? Was it a good or bad experience? Would you go on another adventure? To where?
As a kid, were you scared of ghosts? Any ghost in particular (Marley? Casper?)?
STUDY: Have someone read the following verses out loud.
Read: Matthew 14:22-24
Ask: Why did Jesus dismiss the disciples so abruptly? Why do you think Jesus wanted to pray alone (what just happened in the previous passage)? How might Jesus be tempted by His growing popularity?
Read: Matthew 14:25-29a Note: The fourth watch of the night would be from 3am-6am.
Ask: Why were the disciples afraid? Do you think they recognized it was Jesus coming to them? How does Jesus encourage them? What does Peter’s response tell us about his personality? Would you be like Peter or would you stay on the boat?
Read: Matthew 14:29b-33
Ask: Why do you think Jesus invited Peter to step out in faith? When did Peter begin to sink? Why then and not when he first stepped onto the water? What do the disciples conclude about Jesus as a result of this faith-stretching experience?
APPLICATION: What difference does this make in the way I live?
Ask: What do you see in your own life that parallels Peter’s attempt to walk on water?
Ask: How hard is it to keep your focus on Jesus in the midst of the storms of life? What
can you be doing to make sure you keep your focus on Jesus?
Ask: What does the Key Verse mean? How does it help to keep your priorities in order?
Close in prayer and pray for your group and family throughout the week!
